Cuanzo Ready for 2014 Lee Steere Classic

Unlucky to be scratched from the running of the Group 2 W.A. Guineas (1600m) last time out with a minor ailment, trainer Eric Wake is confident classy three-year-old Cuanzo will line up for Saturday’s Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) in peak condition.

Finishing outside the places just once in seven competitive starts to date, Cuanzo stamped his claims as a serious W.A. Guineas contender when charging home to finish a credible third behind Kingston Town Classic acceptors Disposition and Rommel in the Listed Fairetha Stakes (1400m), however was unable to take to the barriers with noticeable leg swelling.

Thrilled with the form and class displayed by the Oratorio gelding in the lead-up to the Lee Steere Classic, Wake told Perth Racing he believes a spider bite was to blame for Cuanzo’s swollen leg last time and is confident of a successful performance this weekend.

“Cuanzo was bitten by something – maybe a spider – because his hind leg just blew up.

“It kept him out of the Guineas but he only missed a couple days of work, so it was nothing major.

“He was pretty fit beforehand getting ready for the mile and he’s come through it all good.”

Stamping his claims as one to watch when taking out a strong Belmont barrier trial prior to his competitive debut on March 31st, Cuanzo announced his racing arrival when taking out a minor over 1200m first-up and repeating the dose in the Westspeed Nursery 2.y.o (1400m) on May 10th; returning to the paddock following a credible third amongst classy competition in the Passages Resource Centre 2.y.o (1300m) on May 24th.

Running fourth behind the likes of Shengmu in the Westspeed 3.y.o (1000m) first-up this time, the gelding out of Geigerita placed third in the Listed Belgravia Stakes (1200m) on October 18th before returning to the winner’s circle in the Seacorp 3.y.o (1100m) in his only other start prior to the Fairetha Stakes.
