Liberty’s Gem Primed for 2014 Lee Steere Classic Success

December 4th, 2014

A standout performer over his short racing career so far, trainer Simon Miller is confident talented three-year-old Liberty’s Gem will line up for Saturday’s Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) at Ascot Racecourse in perfect order.

Finishing worse than first just once in his three competitive starts, Liberty’s Gem comfortably took out a minor over 1200m on debut, and while blocked for a run late when second in the Westspeed 3.y.o (1200m), responded in the best way possible when taking out the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) last time out.

Revealing several Hong Kong-based parties have been interested in purchasing the Statue Of Liberty gelding, Miller said he is considering a trip east for major black type events over the 2015 Autumn Racing Carnival, but is thrilled with his condition leading into the Lee Steere Classic.

“I am just trying to fight off Hong Kong at the moment, they are coming from every angle to secure him,” Miller told Racing Ahead.

“He is a really nice horse.

“He is up to 1400 and I shouldn’t think that will be a worry and he has drawn a good gate.

“Because it is down set weights and meets them all better for the weights for beating them home.

“You would think that he would be hard to beat.

“There is a couple coming back from the Guineas, but usually when they come back from the Guineas it is a last resort and I have targeted mine for that race.

“He is probably my best for the day and he hasn’t gone backwards since his last win.

“Win, lose or draw he will be in the paddock after this run and then we will plan a campaign in the autumn somewhere.”

Stamping his claims as a one to watch when taking out three strong barrier trials prior to his racing debut, Liberty’s Gem has been confirmed to be partnered by last-start jockey Ben Melham and will leave from the ideal barrier 3 in the 2014 Lee Steere Classic.
