Liberty’s Gem to Contest 2014 Lee Steere Classic

November 26th, 2014

Yet to finish worse than second in his short racing career so far, trainer Simon Miller has confirmed classy three-year-old Liberty’s Gem will contest the Group 3 Lee Steere Classic (1400m) at Perth’s Ascot Racecourse on December 6th.

Stamping his claims as one to watch over his first two starts in minor sprinting events on debut, Liberty’s Gem made a successful transition to black type racing last time out when displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight to take out the Listed Placid Ark Stakes (1200m) last time out on November 22nd.

Understandably thrilled by the class displayed by the Statue Of Liberty gelding since first appearing on course competitively at the end of September, Miller told the West Australian he is confident Liberty’s Gem will continue to impress through the 2014 Lee Steere Classic and into the 2015 racing calendar.

“I was in a really good position with two quality horses that drew one and two and are both on speed,” Miller said of Liberty’s Gem and stable mate Fuld’s Bet in the Placid Ark Stakes.

“The winner just oozes his class. He’s got so much ability.

“When he figures it out, he’s going to be an absolute ripper this guy.”

Taking out three strong barrier trials at Lark Hill and Belmont Park prior to his competitive racing debut, Liberty’s Gem managed to overcome an early check to poke clear for victory in the Westspeed 3.y.o (1200m) first-up on September 27th before placing a close second to Silver Magic Ships in a minor over 1200m on October 11th.

A final field and barrier draw for the 2014 Lee Steere Classic is due to be released by midday on Wednesday, December 3rd.
