Lee Steere Classic History

First held in 1983 when Corona Miss claimed victory, the Lee Steere Classic originated as a Listed race but gained its current Group 3 status soon after in 1986.

The Lee Steere Classic has always been run over 1400m and conducted at Ascot Racecourse, except for in 2003 when the race was held at Belmont Park Racecourse, the other major racing venue in metropolitan WA.

In 2004 the Lee Steere Classic was not run, as two editions were held the next year in January and then December of 2005.

Lee Steere Classic Betting

Punters looking for a guide to their Lee Steere Classic bets can use the earlier Perth feature races as a guide with many runners coming via events such as the Group 3 Prince Of Wales Stakes (1200m) in October, the Group 3 Asian Beau Stakes (1400m) or the Group 2 Lee Steere Stakes (1400m) held in early November.

Quality horses also may have previously contested the Group 2 WA Guineas (1600m) three weeks earlier, making the WA Guineas / Lee Steere Classic a popular betting double for punters.

The last horse to win the WA Guineas and the Lee Steere Classic in the same season was Classy Dresser in 1993, however many other Lee Steere Classic winners previously placed in the WA Guineas making it an excellent early lead-up.
